Attend Public Hearings
Public hearings are meetings held by committees or agencies at which members of the public, lobbyists, legislators, and state agency representatives may speak or register for or against a proposal. Being present and participating, sends a message to elected officials, and allows you to inform them of what this legislation means for you.
When speaking at public hearing, be sure to include the following:
- Who you are. They need to know where your from. Being from a different part of the state than committee members often brings a different perspective that they may not have considered.
- How the issue will help/hurt you. If a potential bill takes away your only option, let legislators know that.
- Give them some alternatives. Giving legislators different ideas of what could be done instead is important.
During the 2009-2010 legislative session, 37 WCCC supporters provided testimony at 3 Public Hearings on payday loans. That testimony was essential in letting elected officials know how the proposed legislation would impact the community, and themselves.
