Write Newspapers
Writing letters to your local newspaper's editorial board is another great way of reaching state legislators. Just as when writing letters to legislators, you should consider the following:
- Keep your letter short. Letters to the Editor can typically only be 200-300 words long.
- Explain your position. Be clear and concise with regard to your position on the issue you address in your letter.
- Letters must be signed, and when they are sent they need to include your name, address and telephone number.
Below is a sample letter:
To the Editor:
In response to your editorial about Wisconsin Act 405, I strongly oppose any law that limits my choices as a consumer. The government does not have a right to interfere in my personal, private financial transactions. Further, I am opposed to any state-sponsored database as they pose a threat to my personal privacy.
As a resident of Wisconsin, I urge both Democrats and Republicans to work to repeal Wisconsin Act 405 and restore consumer access to short term lending options.
Sincerely,
